Life Lessons and Coleslaw

In all reality, every job we have and every year one is in school teaches us new things about the world and ultimately about ourselves.

As I have had three different jobs so far, they have all taught me various life skills. They have taught me so many things about myself. Some big things being how well I work with others, what I want my future career path to look like, and well, that working in a fish restaurant may not be the right fit for me. When one gets their first job, they are not really sure what to expect. I took my prior lifes knowledge of my motto to “just work hard and be nice to people”, as I walked in the door of my first job. Little did I know this job would bring me friends, memories, and much more. I transitioned from being a trainee, to a mentor, and I could not have done it with the help of others around me. The manager over the area I worked in, made sure to always check on me to make sure I was learning the ropes of seating guests at their table, learning how to work the cash register, and everything you need to know about coleslaw and catfish! The guidance that she gave me, led me to become a stronger leader as well. She led by making everyone feel welcome, and collaborated with me on making sure I knew step by step instructions on how to do everything that was in my daily job description.

This is not the only time that I have felt this reassuring guidance in my life. Throughout school I had many mentors, teachers, and friends that helped me in my academics and everyday life. I had a tutor in math all throughout high school who was a constant in my life. Having her made me realize building connections and strengthening relationships can be an important part in one's work environment. This is due to the fact that communication is key. No matter if there is a problem in one's work environment or if it just comes to sharing daily wins and successes with one another. This is something I have always noticed being prominent in school and work environments, communication between teachers and students. Communication between boss and employee comes down to having structure. I will certainly be transferring this concept from the time I have spent in the classroom into what will be my first future career.

As this is only my second year in college, I have already been a part of Freshman Forum, and I am a member of Phi Mu, as well as PRSSA and I plan to be a part of more organizations before I graduate. As my sorority gives me many opportunities to serve, meet new people, and build community. I strive for more opportunities, new lessons to be learned, and more relationships to be built. I plan to accomplish these inquiries by stepping up, and putting myself out there any chance that I get. I have learned so much from others with the help of a guiding hand and a listening ear. This is what I hope to continue to receive in my future workplace. These are certainly lessons, and life skills I will be taking with me with every future endeavor in front of me, even remembering how to make the famous coleslaw!
